Did You Know? 2025-2026 Apartment Security Deposit Interest Rates
San Francisco Security Deposit Interest Rates Remain at 5% for 2025-2026.
The City of San Francisco requires Landlords to pay interest to renters on their security deposits.
For the period from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, the interest rate stands at 5.0%, compared to 5.2% in the previous year. Let's delve into what these numbers mean, how they are determined, and the implications for both landlords and tenants.
Calculation Methodology:
The city of San Francisco, known for its progressive tenant protection laws, follows a specific formula outlined in the Administrative Code, Chapter 49.2. The Rent Board employs the annual average of the 90-day AA Financial Commercial Paper Interest Rate from the immediately preceding calendar year, as published by the Federal Reserve.
For the 2025-2026 period, the rate is set at 5.0%. This is a modest decrease from 5.2% for the period March 1, 2024, through February 28, 2025. Understanding this methodology is crucial for both landlords and tenants to navigate their financial responsibilities and rights.
