The Origins of the San Francisco Realtor’s Association District Map

The SFAR District Map has a complex history of contributors from various cartographers, real estate professionals, surveyors, government agencies, and even public input over the years. Its creation was not the work of a single individual but rather a collaborative effort spanning several generations and many revisions. With the city in constant evolution, so has the district map; the number of unique neighborhoods in the city rivals that of its microclimates. To acknowledge these differences, residents and real estate professionals have, over time, established 10 districts and 89 subdistricts.

From the colorful cultural mixing pot of the Inner Mission to the quiet suburban oasis of the Outer Sunset, each of these districts/subdistricts represents a distinct environment, helping locals, investors, newcomers, and real estate professionals quickly identify the defining features of a property’s location. To help new investors understand the dizzying number of neighborhoods in San Francisco, we’ve created an interactive SFAR district map with descriptions of each neighborhood.
