San Francisco Residential Development History - 2018 to Now

14,773 new units of multifamily have come online between 2018 and the end of November, 2021. 4,017 new residential units were delivered year-to-date 2021, with notable contributions from major projects like the third phase of Trinity Plaza (502 units), the first phase of HOPE SF’s low incoming housing development (167 units), Chorus Apartments at 30 Otis Street (195 units), and Hanover SOMA West at 1140 Harrison Street (242 units). The data is derived from the Department of Building Inspection’s count of units certified for occupancy and includes accessory dwelling units and single family homes that have been delivered.

Since London Breed promised a more streamlined approval process for new housing in 2018, the city has fallen just short of the mayor’s goal of delivering 5,000+ units per year. The last two years has been a marked improvement over a less-than-stellar 2018 and 2019 for new housing development; at least 4,000 new units have been delivered in 2020 and 2021.

Several major housing developments have been delivered in 2021; the most notable of these was the third phase of Trinity Place, a 502-unit apartment development that was completed this June. The final phase of Trinity Place, located Mid-Market of Downtown San Francisco, will be completed early 2022 and will contribute another 500+ units to the city’s supply. In total, the four phases of the project will have added 1,900+ units to the market.
